Tokai, Nagoya and its surrounging region

map of tokai In Tokai Region, consisting of three prefectures - Aichi, Shizuoka and Gifu, there are a big castle, a small but very old castle, fishing ports supplying fresh and tasty seafoods and a small historic mountain village where remain farmhouses, a few hundreds years old. There are many places so attractive and so popular among tourists.

Shimoda

Shimoda, Shizuoka, Tokai Shimoda, a coastal city, is located in the southernmost on Izu Peninsula, Shizuoka Prefecture, Tokai Region. Shimoda is not a big city, whose population is a little more than 20 thousands, though it has some fishing ports and restaurants which provide tourists with fresh and tasty seafoods.

Also in Shimoda there are some places where historic events happened in the 19th century. In addition, there are onsen ( hot springs ) and beaches where visitors could enjoy sunbathing, swimming and surfing.

Nagoya

Nagoya, Aichi, Tokai Nagoya is the capital city of Aichi Prefecture, the largest city in Tokai Region and the fourth largest city in Japan. There in the city is Nagoya-jo Castle ( right ), one of the biggest castles in Japan. The castle was built in A.D.1610, destroyed in A.D.1945 during WWII and rebuilt in A.D.1959.

Also Nagoya City has very unique food culture, so in the city, tourists could enjoy various Nagoya Meshi, which means Nagoya cuisine or dishes. There in the city are many restaurants which serve various local specialty dishes.

Inuyama

Inuyama, Aichi, Tokai Inuyama, located in the north of Aichi Prefecture, is a small city whose population is a little more than 73 thousands. However the city is very famous for Inuyama-jo Castle ( right ) which has been surviving since A.D.1537 for almost five centuries and whose main keep is one of designated National Treasures of Japan.

Also it is fun to walk around a small castle town, where remain old traditional merchant houses, old temples, Japanese restaurants and so on. In spring, especially in the season of cherry blossoms, visitors could enjoy Hanami ( Sakura Viewing ) while walking around.

Shirakwa-go

Shirakawa-go, Gifu, Tokai Shirakawa-go, a mountaineous village with heavy snowfall, is located in the north of Gifu Prefecture in the northwest of Tokai Region and is one of UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Sites. Lots of tourists visit the village to see traditional and unique Gassho Style Houses ( right ), some of which are more than 250 years old.

In the village and in the Gassho Style Houses, tourists could catch a glimpse of lives in the 18th-19th centuries in the village.
